DALLAS, 2 December 2003 — Roman Cechmanek made 18 saves and Jaroslav Modry scored the game-winning goal late in the second period as the Los Angeles Kings edged the Dallas Stars 2-1 in the National Hockey League on Sunday.
Michael Cammalleri scored the other goal for the Kings, who ended Dallas’ season-high three-game winning streak. The Stars had 14 of their 19 shots in the second period alone, when they had five power plays. But Cechmanek made several big saves to give the Kings their third win in six games.
Marty Turco made 19 saves in the Stars goal, who played most of the last two periods without star forward Mike Modano.
Modano left the game with facial injuries after being hit with a high stick from Alexander Frolov. He did not return.
The Kings announced during the game that they had acquired forward Martin Straka from the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Martin Strbak and forward Sergei Anshakov.
Mighty Ducks 1 Wild 1
In St. Paul, Manny Fernandez made 32 saves to lift the Minnesota Wild into a 1-1 tie with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
Wes Walz scored the lone goal for the Wild, which has just one win in its last eight games (1-5-2). Sandis Ozolinsh scored the lone goal for the Mighty Ducks, who haven’t lost in regulation time in 11 games (4-0-3-4).
Maple Leafs 4 Rangers 2
In New York, Trevor Kidd made 33 saves in his first start of the season as the Toronto Maple Leafs doubled the Rangers 4-2 for their fifth straight win. Mats Sundin had a goal and an assist for the Leafs. Tom Fitzgerald, Darcy Tucker and Mikael Renberg also scored for Toronto. Alex Kovalev and Jan Hlavec scored the New York goals.
Coyotes 3 Bruins 3
In Boston, Shane Doan scored with 1:08 left in regulation time to give the Phoenix Coyotes a 3-3 tie with the Boston Bruins.
Travis Green had a goal and an assist for the Bruins, who were playing the Coyotes for the only time this season. Patrice Bergeron and Glenn Murray scored the other Boston goals.
Sharks 2 Oilers 1
In Edmonton, Vesa Toskala stopped 35 shots to give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win over the Oilers. Patrick Marleau scored the game-winning goal for the Sharks late in the second period, while Brad Stuart had the other San Jose goal. Jarret Stoll scored the lone goal for the Oilers.
Avalanche 1 Devils 1
In Denver, Erik Rasmussen scored late in the second period to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 1-1 tie with the Colorado Avalanche. The Devils are now 10-1-4 in their past 15 games after their 13-game unbeaten streak was snapped on Friday night.
