JEDDAH, 24 December 2003 — Fond of sports, food, music, games, dances?
You could have them all if you go on Friday to the Philippine Consulate, where a fiesta of sorts is to be held as part of the OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) Month.
Dubbed “Kabuhayan, Palaro, Sayaw at Musika sa Buwan ng OFWs,” the whole-day festivity will start from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.
The event will be divided into four categories: Kabuhayan (business), wherein food stalls and booths will be available to showcase products and amenities from the Philippines, as well as business opportunities for those who plan to return home for good.
In the palaro (sports) portion, women’s volleyball teams representing Saudia-D’ Spikers, Saudi German Hospital, Erfan-Bagedo Hospital, and King Abdulaziz Hospital & Oncology Center will compete for the championship title. The games begin at 8 a.m.
Sayaw (dance), which starts at 1 p.m., is a competition for children on the dance craze “spaghetti” and otso/otso, followed by a “Mr. Suave” song interpretation contest.
Organizers said the Dianalan sisters of International Philippine School in Jeddah (IPSJ) will compete with the Fernandez sisters of Al-Hekma International School, while Grade-5 pupils will compete with Grade-6 IPSJ dancers.
In the song/dance interpretation of the famous “Mr. Suave,” the participants are mostly elementary & high school male students, with female dancers as backup.
Musika (music) will be held in the evening, featuring a children’s duet singing competition. Students/pupils from International Philippine School in Jeddah and Al Hekma have been invited to participate in this contest, organizers said.
The program will also feature local talents, dancers, singers, bands and lots of games for the kids, plus fun and surprises for everyone.
The event is being organized by the OFW Cooperative Council and OFWNet Foundation, in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate and POLO/OWWA.
