RIYADH, 11 January 2004 — Two Non-Resident Indian groups, at separate meetings, slammed the move of India’s University Grants Commission to hold a common entrance test (CET) for admission to Indian universities, including Aligarh Muslim University, and said it would amount to robbing the minority character of Muslim institutions.

Their concerns were expressed at meetings by two separate Aligarh Muslim University old boys’ associations.

The speakers said that if the order was implemented, it would reduce the number of Muslim students entering professional streams.

There are 185 universities in India run by the state and private organizations. Fifteen more, including AMU, are financed by the federal government.
