NEW DELHI, 11 January 2004 — The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to a Samajwadi Party lawmaker, Ramjilal Suman, and Delhi police on a petition by his second wife Sushila Suman. She wants a case registered against her husband for allegedly raping the couple’s maid, indulging in bigamy and criminal intimidation.
Justice B.N. Chaturvedi directed Delhi’s police commissioner to provide protection to Sushila and issued notices to the police, the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Home Ministry and Ramjilal Suman.
Sushila Suman has accused her husband Ramjilal of raping their 15-year old minor maid Asha. Sushila also apprehends danger to her life, her 16-year-old son and her parents.
Sushila claims that Ramjilal, who represents Ferozabad in Parliament, raped her before their marriage, but afraid of consequent legal punishment married her according to Hindu rites and customs. Sushila also says that at the time of their marriage, she was not aware that Ramjilal was married to Premlata, who lives in Agra.
