AMMAN, 6 February 2004 — The United States has proposed the allocation of $456 million to Jordan in military and economic assistance for 2005, Planning and International Cooperation Minister Bassem Awadallah was quoted as saying yesterday.
“Out of the total US aid, $250 million will go to support economic projects, while the remaining will be offered as military assistance,” he said in remarks published by the daily newspaper Al-Rai.
Jordan received $1.1 billion in additional American aid last year to help it cope with the effects of the US-led war on neighboring Iraq which ousted the regime of President Saddam Hussein.
Awadallah has just concluded a visit to the United States where he discussed various aspects of economic cooperation between the two countries, including the expected US aid to Jordan for the coming year.
“US officials have showed understanding of the Jordanian economy’s needs and commended the outcome of the Kingdom’s economic reforms,” he said.
