RIYADH, 22 February 2004 — Saudi Arabia said yesterday that an invitation to Algerian Islamist leader Abbasi Madani had “no political implications” and that the two countries continued to enjoy close ties.
“The Saudi Foreign Ministry wishes to clarify that Abbasi Madani attended the annual reception hosted by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd for foreign Haj delegates in Mina, among other guests who have no official capacity, and his presence did not have any political implications,” a ministry official told the Saudi Press Agency.
