MUSCAT, 9 March 2004 — Oman’s Sultan Qaboos named by royal decree yesterday Rawya bint Saud Al-Bussaidi as the new higher education minister, the country’s first woman minister with portfolio, in a minor Cabinet reshuffle.
The announcement coincided with International Women’s Day. Shakoor bint Mohammed Al-Ghammari, a female member of the Omani Parliament’s lower house, welcomed the news.
The Cabinet reshuffle saw Bussaidi replacing Yehya ibn Mahfuz Al-Monzeri, who has in turn been appointed by royal decree as the new president of the State Council, the sultanate’s upper house of Parliament.
Monzeri replaces Sheikh Hamoud ibn Abdullah Al-Harthy, who died last week.
