MANAMA, 30 March 2004 — A Yemeni man in his 60s and his dog died early yesterday morning when fire gutted their makeshift home in Riffa, Bahrain.
The fire engulfed the rented farm of Ali Saleh, and apparently one of the man’s dogs refused to abandon his master as the fire raged.
Firefighters were called in at around 1.30 a.m. after neighbors spotted the flames, but it was too late to save Saleh, whose charred remains were discovered alongside the dog after the fire was extinguished.
Neighbors said that the man, who lived alone with two dogs, had no electricity at the farm and believe a candle started the fire.
“We saw him around since we were children,” one neighbor said.
Saleh’s other dog survived and was later seen sniffing around at the scene.
