JEDDAH, 16 April 2004 — Nick Wilton deservedly won the third Khamis Mushayt Road Runners half-marathon, sponsored by Dade Bahring. Fourteen runners braved the early morning winds, as well as the 7,000 feet altitude, to take part in this annual event, which this year has attracted a small contingent representing the Jeddah Road Runners.
The start point lay on the road to the east of Khamis Mushayt, beside some scenic lakes. Three contenders were the favorites to win the half-marathon title, Reynolds and Jacobs, who reside in Khamis Mushayt, and Wilton from Jeddah. The former had the benefit of the sustained altitude training in the southern area, whereas Wilton had just completed a full road running season in Jeddah. The cool temperatures were ideal, although the runners headed into a strong wind, which prevented any fast times.
Wilton was hard pushed by both Reynolds and Jacobs in the fast start, and there wasn’t much between them for the first 8 kilometers. Thereafter, Wilton pulled away, and finished comfortably, winning by 7 minutes from Jacobs, whose legs managed to go round just that little bit faster than Reynolds. The other participants finished at regular intervals, with Browne and Tarrant providing the closest finish of the day. Doddemeade won the A category, with a little in reserve from Steward. Madikoane, Mellor and Lindley ran their own private race for third with the former just edging out MelIor. Three intrepid runners braved a full marathon course of 42.2 kms.
The sponsors Dade Bahring were present to distribute the awards at the post-race brunch, which was also supported by Al Ghoneim Supermarket.
