NEW YORK, 20 April 2004 — Derek Jeter had two hits, two walks and drove in two runs as the New York Yankees downed the Boston Red Sox 7-3 in the third game of their series at Fenway Park on Sunday.
The Yankees scored six runs in the third inning to win for the first time in three attempts against their archrivals this season. The teams were to complete their four-game series the next day.
Gary Sheffield added a pair of doubles and an RBI for the Yankees, while every member of New York’s starting line-up had at least one hit, except for the struggling Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez is 0-for-12 in the series and left seven runners stranded, dropping his average to .156.
In other games, Matt Lawton hit two home runs and had four RBI to lead the Cleveland Indians past the Detroit Tigers 9-7.
In Toronto, Miguel Tejada had four hits to help the Baltimore Orioles blank the Blue Jays 7-0, completing a three-game sweep.
Esteban Loaiza pitched a two-hitter as the Chicago White Sox blanked the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-0.
Loaiza (3-0) struck out five and walked one in pitching his fifth career shutout and 11th complete game.
In Minneapolis, Jacque Jones had two doubles and a triple and drove in four runs, leading the Minnesota Twins to an 8-3 win over the Kansas City Royals.
In Anaheim, Barry Zito pitched six strong innings as the Oakland Athletics beat the Angels 7-1.
Clemens Wins Third NL Start as Astros Cruise
Roger Clemens won his third start in the National League with an impressive seven innings as the Astros beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-1 in Houston on Sunday.
Clemens (3-0), who retired briefly last year only to sign a free agency contract with his hometown Astros in the off-season, allowed one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.
He even got into the act at the plate, recording just the second RBI of his career when he singled in Brad Ausmus.
Clemens started his NL career with 17 scoreless innings before finally allowing a run on a fourth inning single by Brady Clark, the only run he allowed.
In other games, Adam Dunn hit a pair of homers and Juan Castro’s two-run triple in the 10th inning gave the Cincinnati Reds a wild 11-10 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Andruw Jones scored all the way from first base on a fly ball that Miguel Cabrera misjudged in the sun in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Atlanta Braves a 3-2 win over the Florida Marlins.
In New York, Craig Wilson had three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates mauled the Mets 8-1.
Doug Glanville hit a lead-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Philadelphia Phillies a 5-4 win over the Montreal Expos.
In St. Louis, Todd Helton homered for the third straight game as the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals.
Barry Bonds hit two homers, had four hits and drove in five runs — but it still was not enough as the San Francisco Giants lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers again, 7-6.
Bonds blasted career home runs number 664 and 665, but the Dodgers hit three home runs of their own to make a winner of Jeff Weaver (1-1).
In San Diego, Ryan Klesko hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Padres a 6-5 comeback win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Phil Nevin also drove in a run during the four-run ninth and Mark Loretta added three hits for the Padres.
Richie Sexson, Bobby Estalella and Luis Gonzalez all homered to give the D-Backs a 5-2 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth.
