JUBAIL, 13 May 2004 — As a community service project to commemorate its first anniversary, Global Toastmasters organized the first ever quiz competition for schoolchildren in the Eastern Province. Over 600 participants and parents turned out for the event.
Eighty teams, composed of three members each, signed up for the competition from five schools including the International Indian School, Jubail (IISJ), the International School Jubail (Al-Hussan Academy), the Pakistan International School, Jubail, Prince Moattasem Jubail and the International Indian School, Dammam (IISD).
The day started with a preliminary round to whittle the group down to the eight best teams. Then the final quiz competition began consisting of eight rounds including audio, visual and rapid rounds.
The quiz questions tested the students’ knowledge in areas such as current affairs, sports, history, literature, cinema, music, science, geography and nature. The winner of the event was IISJ, second was IISD and third place went to Prince Moattasem School, Jubail.
“We were very pleased with the enthusiasm shown by the community for this event and we hope that we can sponsor regular activities for local students,” said Global Toastmasters Founding President Waheed Lateef. “I must thank Raji Krishnan, Parvathy Narayan and P.G.R. Nair for all their hard work in making this event a success. I also want to thank the school coordinators and principals for their cooperation.”
Current Global Toastmasters President Benny Jose said: “Our goal in organizing this competition was to help schoolchildren become better leaders and better communicators. We believe that this in turn will help them to be more effective in making our world a better place to live. Good communication is the key to success and peace. It brings people together and creates harmony. What could be more essential in these difficult times?”
