FORT WORTH, Texas, 25 May 2004 — Steve Flesch celebrated his 37th birthday by winning the $5 million Colonial tournament by one stroke from Chad Campbell on Sunday.
Flesch carded a three-under-par 67 in windy conditions to finish on 11-under 269 and win his second PGA Tour title.
Campbell, who shared the 54-hole lead with Flesch and Brian Gay, birdied the 18th hole for a 68 and second place. Stephen Ames of Trinidad and Tobago produced the best round of the day, a six-under 64, to take third on 271.
New Zealand’s Craig Perks was fourth on 273 following a 68. Bo Van Pelt, Skip Kendall, Tim Petrovic and Robert Gamez tied for fifth on 274. Gay, who had a 65 in the third round, struggled to a five-over 75 on Sunday to finish tied 14th on 277 at the Colonial Country Club.
Jesper Parnevik, three shots off the lead after three rounds, made a run at the leaders with an eagle at the first hole and a birdie at the third. The Swede made the turn in a sparkling four-under 31 but found loads of trouble on the back nine.
Steinhauer Snaps Five-Year Drought With LPGA Triumph
In New Rochelle, New York. American Sherri Steinhauer snapped a five-year LPGA victory drought here Sunday, firing a two-under par 69 to win the $1.25 million Sybase Open by two strokes over Korean Grace Park.
The 19-year LPGA veteran shot a two-under-par 69 for a 12-under 272 for her first tournament victory since she won the 1999 Women’s British Open.
Steinhauer’s previous best this season was a 13th-place finish at the Office Dept Championship. Last year, she finished no better than 17th in a tournament. Park fired a 68 Sunday at the Wykagyl Country Club for 274.
Becky Morgan of Wales, who was tied for the lead with Steinhauer at 10-under after the third round, carded a 72 and finished in third place.
