JEDDAH, 28 May 2004 — Danny Bautista once again proved his versatility bagging the first prize of the 3-6-9 variation of the tournament at the Iceland Bowling Center here.
Easily qualifying himself on his first try, Bautista topped the 4-game quarterfinals with his blitz of 214, 234, 236 & 203 leaving behind other contenders with a scratch series of 887.
Closest to Bautista was Ribal, whose 835 scratch total was sparkled by a 251 opener and pushed by 190, 226 and 168.
Completing the eight survivors for the 1-game carryover semifinals were Hano 811, Mohammad Al Shaikh 773, Toto Lim 765, Ossama Fatany 761, Mamdouh Ali 758 and Letta Stour, who survived Storm in 8th place with her 747 against the latter's 745.
The 1-game semifinals was sustenance of output for the top 3 quarterfinal finishers to maintain their respective positions as Mamdouh from No. 7 disqualified the rest of the semifinalist jumping to No. 4 with 969 to challenge No. 3 finisher Hano in the first stepladder match.
Mamdouh and Lim were deadlocked at 969-all but got the right to advance based on the qualifying hi-game rulings. Mamdouh's 267 was higher than Lim's output.
In the stepladder finals, it was the match between Mamdouh and Hano which was close when the former who finished ahead with 196 escaped the latter, who missed one strike on the last frame to lag 7 pins, managed 186.
The tie between Mamdouh and Ribal turned out to be an easy one for the challenger as Ribal faded at 149 to Mamdouh's 227.
Bautista and Mamdouh were on the mark till Mamdouh missed an easy 3-6-10 spare midway through the match. Bautista took a firm grip of the championship and won with moderate scores of 179-149.
The final results: Bautista - Champion, Mamdouh - 1st runner-up, Ribal - 2nd runner-up, Hano - 3rd runner-up, Lim 4th runner-up, Al Shaikh 5th runner-up, Fatany - 6th runner-up and Letta - 7th runner-up.
