Dar Al Hekma College held an interior design exhibition recently to display work done by its graduating class. The main concept behind the show was for exhibitors to design a store that specialized in selling specific items or provided a unique service.
Each project was designed by a graduating student in cooperation with a first-year student from the College’s Graphic Design course who created the logos and accessories necessary for the store.
Jawaher Al-Maarawi designed a media store named “Beat”, which was aimed at youngsters and sold techno music CDs. One interesting feature of the display was the customer’s ability to choose a CD and listen to it in a designated area before buying. The lighting and colors used were compliant with the theme to give the place a disco feel in order to grab the attention of the younger buyer.
Hadeel Ayoub designed a store called “Candy Land” with the dual function of being both a candy shop and a small theme park for children to play games while doing their candy shopping. Hadeel said that studying at the college had helped her a lot and she proudly mentioned that her idea had been sold. She said it would appear in the market within a year.
“Vaso”, a retail shop display selling crystal and glass, was N. Merve Coknil’s design. Her design gave customers enough space to move and feel the beauty of the place and the items. The Turkish student was also satisfied with her studies at the college. “It developed my personal skills and changed my view completely,” she said. Reem Abu-Zaied, a first-year student, was her partner and came up with the logos, accessories and stationary for the store.
A Japanese flower arrangement store called “Ikebana” was designed by Roaa Naseer. In this concept store, customers got to see the flowers being arranged in the traditional Japanese style, which in itself was a pleasure to watch even if nothing was purchased.
The idea behind the “Reflexology” project came from Wasma Al-Saud.
The exhibit was a health center targeted toward businessmen and women for feet massage in order to relieve stress anytime of the day. According to Wasma, the maximum time a customer would spend in the center would be 20 minutes. A special feature of the design was that it bore in mind the needs of disabled people. Her partner from the first-year Graphics Design course was Maha Al-Sedari.
