JEDDAH, 5 July 2004 — Nearly 39,000 Indonesians in the Kingdom have registered to vote in today’s presidential polls. This is the first direct election for a president and also the first time overseas Indonesians can vote.
Some 80,000 Indonesians have registered to vote in the Middle East.
There are 27 voting centers in the Kingdom, according to an Indonesian consular spokesman.
Indonesians will elect a president from among five candidates. To win, a candidate must garner at least 50 percent of the votes, which is unlikely in the first round. In the likely second round the candidate with the most votes wins, he added.
