NEW YORK, 8 July 2004 — Rondell White and Bobby Higginson both hit two-run homers and Jason Johnson pitched eight strong innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 9-1 rout over the New York Yankees in American League play on Tuesday.
The Tigers pounded out 14 hits to end a five-game losing streak and win for the first time in Yankee stadium since Sept. 7, 2002.
Dmitri Young had three hits — all doubles — and scored twice and drove in a pair of runs as the Tigers broke open a 2-1 game with five runs in the sixth inning.
White also had three hits against his former team and drove in three runs as the Tigers handed the Yankees their fourth loss in five games since sweeping the Boston Red Sox in a series last week.
Mike Mussina (9-6) continued his recent struggles, allowing seven runs on nine hits over six innings, striking out eight and walking one but allowing the two home runs.
In the bottom half of the inning, Urbina threw behind Gary Sheffield and both benches were warned.
In other games, Tim Wakefield allowed three hits over seven shutout innings to win for the first time in six weeks as the Boston Red Sox mauled the Oakland Athletics, 11-0.
Johnny Damon had five singles for the Red Sox, while Bill Mueller hit a three-run home run in the second inning.
Mark Hendrickson pitched eight shutout innings as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays snapped a three-game losing streak by edging the Baltimore Orioles 3-1. Hendrickson (6-6) allowed six hits and struck out two before Danys Baez allowed a run in the ninth but still got his 17th save.
In Toronto, Reed Johnson and Josh Phelps both homered in a six-run first inning and the Blue Jays hung on to beat the Seattle Mariners 7-6.
Miguel Batista (8-5) allowed four runs on six hits with six walks in six innings, but got the win and Jason Frasor pitched the ninth for his ninth save.
Cliff Lee pitched 6 2/3 strong innings as the Cleveland Indians edged the Texas Rangers 4-1 to snap a three-game losing streak. David Riske picked up his third save for the Tribe while Ronnie Belliard and Travis Hafner both drove in two runs.
In Minneapolis, Johan Santana pitched his first career complete-game — a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts — as the Minnesota Twins blanked the Kansas City Royals 4-0.
Torii Hunter homered and had two hits for the Twins, who handed the Royals their seventh straight loss and 12th loss in the last 13 games.
Jeff DaVanon hit a three-run homer as the Anaheim Angels beat the White Sox 6-2 in a rain delayed game in Chicago. John Lackey pitched seven solid innings for the win and Freddy Garcia took the loss on his home debut.

Marlins Over Pirates
Alex Gonzalez hit a tie-breaking three-run home run in the seventh inning to lead the Florida Marlins to a 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in National League play in Miami on Tuesday.
The loss snapped the Pirates 10-game winning streak, the longest since they won 11 straight from Sept. 12, 1996.
The defending World Series champion Marlins won for just the second time in seven games and also avoided dropping to the .500 mark.
Miguel Cabrera had three hits and drove in three runs for the Marlins, who scored four runs in the seventh inning to erase a 3-2 Pittsburgh lead.
Mike Lowell and Matt Treanor both had two hits and scored a run for the Marlins, who had 11 hits in the game against five Pittsburgh pitchers.
In other play, Al Leiter pitched seven strong innings as the New York Mets scored an important 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Leiter (5-2) allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts to help the Mets close to within two games of the first place Phillies in the NL East.
Kaz Matsui had three hits for New York and Richard Hidalgo added a pair of hits while Braden Looper pitched the ninth for his 17th save.
In San Juan, Puerto Rico, Russ Ortiz pitched seven shutout innings to help the Atlanta Braves edge the Montreal Expos 1-0.
John Smoltz got the last four outs for his 15th save of the season as the Braves moved a game over the .500 mark (42-41).
Keith Ginter hit a two-run homer to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Victor Santos (8-3) allowed two runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings as the Brewers hit the half-way mark at 43-38, their first winning record this late in the season since 1998.
In St. Louis, Jim Edmonds and Edgar Renteria both homered as the Cardinals got past the Cincinnati Reds 5-3.
Matt Morris (9-6) pitched seven solid innings for the Cards, who have the best record in the major leagues after their fifth straight win.
In San Diego, Mark Loretta and Brian Giles both homered as the Padres beat the Houston Astros 5-3.
Terrence Long added a two-run double for the Padres, who have won five straight.
Adrian Beltre and Jose Hernandez homered to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Jose Lima got the win with seven strong innings for the Dodgers, who have won four straight, and Eric Gagne pitched the ninth for his 22nd save, one day after his 84-game consecutive save streak was snapped.
In San Francisco, Jeromy Burnitz hit a three-run homer and drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the ninth inning, leading the Colorado Rockies to an 8-6 comeback win over the Giants.
Todd Helton also homered for the Rockies, who overcame a 6-1 deficit. A.J. Pierzynski homered for the Giants, who wasted a one-hit, seven inning effort from starter Jason Schmidt.
