ZAMBOANGA CITY, 9 August 2004 — A bodyguard of Filipino world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao allegedly shot and seriously wounded a radio broadcaster after a quarrel early yesterday in the southern city of General Santos, police said. Police said Jonathan Abayon was shot in the head by William Pael, one of Pacquiao’s security men, after a quarrel around 3 a.m. in the village of Labangon.
“The suspect William Pael is a bodyguard of boxing champion Manny Pacquiao,” the city’s police chief Supt. Willy Dangane told reporters.
He said the Pael escaped after the shooting and is now being hunted by the police.
The 27-year broadcaster, who works from RGMA Super Radyo, is in critical condition. Abayon came from a party in Pacquiao’s house and was returning home with the suspect when they had an argument and quarreled, police said.
