JEDDAH, 12 August 2004 — Following the orders of the Makkah governor, the “Prince Abdul Majeed ibn Abdul Aziz Campaign for the Protection of Marine Environment” has announced the launch of a new environmental protection campaign entitled, “Jeddah Deserves.”
The opening ceremony scheduled for Sept. 8 will launch two weeks of festivities aimed at increasing the public’s awareness of the importance of marine preservation.
It will include several educational programs and activities and feature professional sound, light and water effects as well as aquatic shows taking place on the Red Sea coast.
Groups of scuba divers are currently being formed to conduct an underwater cleanup operation. A number of participants, including members of the royal family who are certified scuba divers, have applied to take part.
Three days of the campaign will be dedicated to seminars and lectures by experts in marine environment sciences. However, activities targeted at all age groups, such as swimming, cycling, running and jet-ski races, as well as essay and photography contests will run throughout the two weeks.
Competitions between schools to clean beaches and drawing competitions to attract children are among activities scheduled at the school level to allow each individual student’s participation.
A massive media campaign has already been launched, but will become more evident in the days and weeks to come.
The Royal Saudi Navy, General Education Department, Command of Border Guards, College of Marine Sciences, Civil Defense, Makkah Region Police, Red Crescent Society, ministries of Agriculture, Commerce and Transport, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Jeddah Municipality all come together to contribute to this campaign, it was announced at a press conference on Monday.
“2gather,” an events and public relations company, has been awarded the organization of the campaign’s activities under the supervision of the Jeddah International Marine Sports Club.
