DHAKA, 18 October 2004 — The Dhaka City Corporation will start rickshaw-license renewals from Oct. 24, issuing new licenses to 1,000 rickshaws a day up to Dec. 31 legalizing a total of 52,000 three-wheelers, owners said.
Dhaka City Corporation Rickshaw Owners Association (DCCROA) General Secretary Mahtabuddin Miah said the decision was taken at a meeting between them and the DCC authorities yesterday.
The meeting between 25 organizations and the Dhaka City Corporation, a day after the owners-pullers had enforced a strike in the city, also agreed to identify innumerous unauthorized rickshaws jamming the streets in the capital.
Meanwhile, the DCC formed a five-member committee to figure out the unauthorized rickshaws. Among the five members, two will come from among the DCC Ward Commissioners, two from rickshaw owners’ association, and a section officer of the DCC.
Mayor Sadeq Hossain Khoka would give the two names of the DCC Ward Commissioners on the committee.
