MUSCAT, 11 November 2004 — Oman’s supreme court has rejected an American woman’s appeal against a death sentence for killing her husband, court sources said yesterday.

The judgment against Rebecca Thompson, 43, was announced on Tuesday, confirming a sentence handed down in July.

Thompson’s husband, oil worker Mark Lee Thompson, was battered to death in December last year.

During her trial, Thompson said that she was provoked into beating her husband to death with an iron bar.

Thompson’s 14-year-old son by a previous marriage, who had been given a three-year suspended sentence for complicity in the killing, has been sent back to the United States because of his age.

An appeal lodged by two 17-year-old Omani boys against their sentence of 10 years imprisonment for complicity in the killing was also rejected.

Thompson’s lawyer said that she would file a clemency appeal.

If the sentence is carried out, Thompson would be the first woman to be hanged in Oman.
