JEDDAH, 14 November 2004 — Four people from the southern Indian state of Kerala were killed in a road accident on Makkah-Madinah expressway yesterday.
The accident happened about 150 kilometers south of Madinah when a bus hit their car from the rear. The victims were on their way to Madinah to pray at the Prophet’s Mosque.
Mustapha Haji, his wife, and two sons Wasim and Marshad died from their injuries in Meeqat hospital where they were taken for emergency medical treatment after the accident. Mustapha’s daughter-in-law Shyamna Sanam Abdullah and the driver of the car survived.
Their bodies have been held in the hospital and will be taken to Madinah for burial today
The victims came to Saudi Arabia every year to perform Umrah.
Saudi Arabia has one of the world’s highest rates of road accidents, mostly due to speeding. About 80,000 people have died in Saudi road crashes since 1970, official figures show.
