MAUI, Hawaii, 24 November 2004 — Jeff Horner scored 18 points and Pierre Pierce added 16, as Iowa knocked off 12th-ranked Louisville, 76-71, in the opening round of the Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center.
Adam Haluska netted 14 points and Greg Brunner contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (2-0), who will meet Texas in the next round. The Longhorns advanced with a win over Chaminade. Francisco Garcia paced the Cardinals with 17 points. Ellis Myles chipped in 12 points and eight boards for Louisville (1-1).
Earlier in Maui, P.J. Tucker collected 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead 15th-ranked Texas to an 84-62 victory over Chaminade.
Kenton Paulino netted 14 points and Kenny Taylor and Jason Klotz each had 12 for the Longhorns (2-0). LaMarcus Aldridge finished with 11 points and five boards for Texas. Chris Reaves poured in 33 points to pace the Silverswords (1-1).
At Chicago, Luke Schenscher hit two free throws with less than 30 seconds remaining to lift third-ranked Georgia Tech to a 60-59 win over Illinois-Chicago at the UIC Pavilion. B.J. Elder finished with 17 points for the Yellow Jackets (2-0), who overcame a six-point deficit early in the second half. Cedrick Banks scored a game-high 23 points for the Flames (0-1), who had their 15-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents snapped.
At Winston-Salem, N.C., Chris Paul scored 15 points with five assists to lead the newly anointed No. 1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons to a 99-72 victory over Yale at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum. Eric Williams and Kyle Visser also netted 15 each, while Chris Ellis contributed 14 in the victory.
At Charlotte, N.C., Daniel Ewing scored 19 points and keyed a late surge as ninth-ranked Duke held off Davidson for a 74-61 victory at Charlotte Coliseum. J.J. Redick tallied 18 points for the Blue Devils (2-0), who have defeated their in-state counterparts at Davidson 18 consecutive times.
