HYDERABAD, 19 March 2005 — Maoists in India’s southern state of Andhra Pradesh yesterday shot dead a police constable and burned down six state-owned buses in separate incidents.

Police said a group of four Maoists opened fire on the constable who was riding a motorcycle in Balanagar town in Mahbubnagar district. Police suspect the rebels wanted to kill a police sub-inspector who passed by the scene minutes earlier and not constable Prakash.

In another incident, the rebels torched half a dozen buses in Nalgonda district, the home district of Home Minister K. Jana Reddy. The buses were on their way to Hyderabad from different places in Guntur district.
