JEDDAH, 23 March 2005 — Over SR1 million of NCB cash stolen in Monday’s heist was still missing yesterday. Police found SR2.5 million with the thief who denied taking the rest from the loot.
The security guard and two of his friends planned Monday morning’s multimillion-riyal robbery. All of them have been apprehended and are under interrogation.
The driver of the armored van had planned the heist with a number of his friends. After the heist he headed to the Jeddah car auction and bought a new Toyota Land Cruiser. He was planning to flee the Kingdom and cross the border to Yemen and from there to another unknown place, a police source said.
It is said that people who steal cars smuggle them to Yemen thinking they will neither be caught nor punished.
The robber was caught a few hours after the heist before he could fully execute his runaway plan. The source added that the thief had a getaway car ready near the National Commercial Bank branch, parked and waiting for him to show up with the money.
