Greece is celebrating the 184th anniversary of the proclamation of its fight for independence, in 1821.
Through the ages, Greece has been at the crossroads of history and civilizations that have enriched the area of the eastern Mediterranean. As a country of the European Union an a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, it follows closely developments in this area of special geopolitical and economic importance, while being a proponent of peace, of stability and of the principles of international law.
Also, in the interest of continuously enhancing political and economic relations of the European Union with the Arabian Peninsula, it supports a substantial dialogue between the Union and the GCC countries.
Long lasting, historical ties between Greece and the Arab world are the foundation of our excellent relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Based on mutual trust and confidence, this solid partnership is constantly evolving in an increasing number of areas. Both countries are committed to the active promotion of stability and economic development in their respective regions, whereas their views on international issues of crucial importance coincide to a remarkable extent, resulting in very good cooperation in international organizations and fora.
Greece’s endeavor to promote enduring values and ideals was also reflected in the organization of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and in its effort to revive the original spirit of this supreme athletic event.
Greece is convinced that friendship and timeless ideals should be typical not only of Olympic Games, but also as a permanent approach to international relations. In this spirit, I am confident that, based on time-proven values and mutual interest, our relations with Saudi Arabia will keep growing from strength to strength.
