Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s Authority for the Care of People with Disabilities on Friday launched the sixth edition of Purple Saturday, with support from government bodies, private companies, nonprofit organizations and several Gulf Cooperation Council states.
The campaign encourages retailers and service providers to offer discounts and benefits to people with disabilities, adopt accessibility standards and better understand the needs of disabled customers.
Launched in 2021 the initiative has grown steadily and increased the number of participating organizations every year. It has also expanded beyond the Kingdom, with several GCC countries taking part for the first time this year.
The authority hopes to keep expanding, with the aim of making Purple Saturday a global event that empowers disabled people, promotes inclusion and spreads accessibility best practice around the world.
This year also sees the launch of the Purple Saturday Award, which recognizes contributors across four categories: best commercial offer, best initiative event, best nonprofit initiative and coverage of people with disabilities.
