Saudi banking sector underpinning sustainable economic growth

Despite heightened geopolitical tensions, persistent regional conflicts, and an uncertain global economic outlook, Saudi Arabia’s financial system has continued to demonstrate remarkable resilience.
Recent data from the Saudi Central Bank’s Monthly Statistical Bulletin for May 2026 show that the Kingdom’s monetary and banking sectors remain well positioned to withstand external shocks while supporting economic growth and diversification.
The latest figures highlight the strength of Saudi Arabia’s financial system, underpinned by ample liquidity, strong capitalization, prudent regulation, and sustained lending activity. Together, these fundamentals provide a solid foundation for financial stability and reinforce the Kingdom’s broader economic resilience.
One of the clearest indicators of this strength is the continued expansion of the money supply. Broad money (M3) reached SR3.4 trillion ($907 billion) at the end of May 2026, up 9.7 percent from a year earlier. The increase was driven largely by a 22 percent annual rise in time and savings deposits — a key component of M2 — as well as growth in other quasi-money deposits included in M3.
This expansion in liquidity reflects strong confidence in the financial system and enhances its capacity to finance government projects, private sector investment, and household spending, all of which are essential to sustaining economic growth.
Saudi Arabia’s substantial financial buffers further reinforce macroeconomic stability. Reserve assets rose to SR1.8 trillion, their highest level since 2020, strengthening the Kingdom’s ability to absorb external shocks while maintaining confidence in its monetary position and overall economic stability.
The banking sector is equally well positioned. Total capital and reserves increased 9.5 percent year on year to SR619.6 billion, supporting a capital adequacy ratio of 20.9 percent — well above both regulatory requirements and Basel standards. This strong capital base provides banks with significant capacity to withstand periods of financial stress.
Healthy liquidity and robust capitalization have enabled banks to continue financing economic activity. Credit extended to the private sector reached SR3.2 trillion in May 2026, an increase of 6.6 percent from a year earlier, reflecting continued support for business expansion and investment.
Importantly, credit growth has been accompanied by prudent risk management.
The banking sector maintains a low non-performing loan ratio of just 1.1 percent and a healthy loan-to-deposit ratio of 79 percent, demonstrating that lending has remained both disciplined and sustainable. These strengths are further reinforced by SAMA’s own strong financial position and effective regulatory oversight.
Taken together, these indicators underscore the resilience of Saudi Arabia’s banking sector and its ability to support economic expansion without compromising financial stability. Strong liquidity, sound capitalization, and conservative lending practices provide banks with the capacity to continue financing businesses, households, and strategic national projects while reinforcing the private sector’s role as a key engine of growth.
The sector’s resilience also reflects Saudi Arabia’s prudent regulatory framework and conservative approach to risk management. Capital adequacy remains comfortably above international standards, while low levels of non-performing loans highlight the quality of banks’ asset portfolios and the effectiveness of credit risk management. These strengths leave the financial system well equipped to navigate periods of market volatility without undermining its role in supporting the broader economy.
More broadly, the sustained strength of Saudi Arabia’s monetary and banking sectors reflects the success of the Kingdom’s long-term economic transformation under Vision 2030. Structural reforms, supported by disciplined fiscal and monetary policies, have enhanced macroeconomic stability, strengthened financial resilience, and fostered a more diversified and competitive economy.
As global economic and geopolitical uncertainties persist, Saudi Arabia’s resilient banking sector, strong financial position, and abundant liquidity provide a solid platform for sustaining investment, expanding private sector activity, and supporting long-term economic growth. Together, these strengths reinforce confidence in the Kingdom’s financial system and position Saudi Arabia to capitalize on future opportunities while maintaining stability in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
