As AI increases cyber complexity, hands-on certification pathways help leaders verify workforce readiness, prove resilience and close skill gaps.

AI hasn’t made cyber-security a boardroom issue, but it has made the boardroom question harder to answer. 

For years, executives have asked whether the business has the right technology, the right policies and the right people in place. Today, that is no longer enough. The sharper question is, can you prove your people are ready to keep up with what comes next? 

An example is the all too familiar story inside modern cyber-security operations: An AI-enabled tool flags unusual activity on a privileged account. The dashboard says the event is suspicious, but what does that actually mean? Is it a compromised identity? A legitimate administrator working late? A cloud permission change? A network routing issue? Or a false positive created by a poorly tuned system? 

The answer doesn’t come from the tool alone, but from the analyst who understands identity, networking, cloud behavior, incident response and business context well enough to know what to trust, what to challenge and what to escalate. 

In our new cyber-security reality, AI can accelerate detection, recognize patterns at machine speed and help teams process more information than humans could possibly manage manually. 

What it can’t do, though, is replace the judgement needed to decide if an alert is harmless, urgent or existential. 

Recent data also is sounding the alarm that organizations will not be able to hire their way out of acquiring the needed expertise. ISC2’s 2024 Cybersecurity Workforce Study estimated the global active cyber-security workforce at 5.5 million people, with a further 4.8 million professionals needed to meet demand.

IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report 2025 put the global average breach cost at $4.44 million and found that 63 per cent of organizations lacked AI governance policies. 

Together, those figures reveal a practical problem for leaders: cyber-risk is expanding faster than many organizations can hire, train and verify the people responsible for managing it. 

This weakness, though, is not simply because of a lack of tools. In many businesses, the bigger issue is assumed competence. Junior team members might not be ready for the incidents they’re asked to support. On the flipside, most senior engineers hold too much institutional knowledge, while security teams are too busy responding to alerts to develop the next layer of talent. Meanwhile, leaders are expected to show the board they’re doing more than buying tools, by proving that risks are under control. 

This is why enterprise training can’t be treated just as an informal benefit, or a reimbursement line item anymore. Leaders need a way to see which skills exist, which gaps create operational risk and whether development is happening against the roles that matter most. For cybersecurity, cloud and networking teams, readiness has to be structured, practical and measurable. 

Certifications can help to close this assurance gap when it’s part of a broader readiness system. It gives leaders a practical way to move from assumed competence to verified capability. It creates a shared standard for what people should know, what skills are missing and which roles need development first. 

When paired with hands-on training and role-based learning paths, certifications become more than just individual achievement. Instead, they become a repeatable way to build, measure and report on operational capability.

Pearson VUE’s 2026 Value of IT Certification Employer Report found that 93 percent of employers report positive return on investment from certified IT employees. Employers estimated over $17,000 in additional annual value for every certified IT employee, with certification linked to performance, retention, cost savings, issue-resolution time and customer satisfaction. 

For executives, this matters because workforce readiness is not just a security issue. It affects productivity, retention, incident response, customer trust and the ability to scale technical teams without relying on a small number of senior experts. 

AI makes that readiness model more urgent than ever, with poorly trained teams over trusting automated recommendations, chasing false positives or missing the business context behind a technical signal. On the other hand, skilled teams can challenge the output, tune the system and understand the consequences of acting too slowly or too aggressively. 

As the IT landscape continues to converge, skill-validation matters beyond the cybersecurity team. Network engineers, cloud teams, developers, IT operations staff, compliance leaders and business users increasingly influence cyber-risk. The goal isn’t to turn every employee into a security expert though. 

Instead, it’s to ensure that the people closest to critical systems have the right level of validated competence for the risks they touch. 

For leaders, the path forward has a practical roadmap. First, assess the skills that exist across IT, cybersecurity and adjacent teams. Second, map those skills to the business risks that matter most: identity compromise, ransomware readiness, cloud exposure, AI governance and incident response. Third, use hands-on training and certification pathways to close those gaps in a way that is measurable, role-based and continuous. 

Organizations that implement this training framework can turn workforce development into strategic infrastructure that secures the business.
