SANAA, 26 April 2005 — A student was killed yesterday when a man hurled a hand grenade at a military vehicle in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, sparking a shootout in which the attacker was killed, relatives and a security source said.
The man, whose identity was not known, hurled the grenade at a Defense Ministry vehicle in a central district of Sanaa where the Finance Ministry is located, witnesses said.
Security men opened fire and the attacker was killed, a security source and witnesses said. A university student passing by was killed and another injured, according to relatives.
An Interior Ministry statement confirmed the attack, but said only that the assailant and some passers-by were wounded. Three hand grenades and a pistol were found in a brief case carried by the assailant, said the statement carried by the official Saba news agency.
