Broussard Hits Three-Run Homer as Indians Beat Blue Jays

CLEVELAND, 15 May 2005 — Ben Broussard hit a three-run double as the Cleveland Indians edged the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 in American League play at Jacobs Fields on Friday night.

Ryan Ludwick added a solo homer for the Indians, who won for the third time in their last four games and won for the eighth time this season without a loss when scoring six or more runs in a game. The Blue Jays saw their three-game win streak snapped, never recovering after giving up four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Broussard’s big blow came in the first inning after a bases-loaded walk to Coco Crisp brought home the first run off Toronto starter and loser Ted Lilly.

In other AL games played Friday, Alex Gonzalez homered with two outs in the ninth inning, helping the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 3-2 win over the Royals in Kansas City. Danys Baez (4-0) went 1 2/3 inning sof scoreless relief for the win. Josh Phelps had a two-run single for the Devil Rays.

Ambiorix Burgos (1-3) allowed the winning homer and took the loss. John Buck had an RBI double for the Royals.

In Chicago, Paul Konerko’s two-run single scored the winning runs as the White Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3.

In Minneapolis, Chad Allen’s RBI double keyed a three-run 11th inning, leading the Texas Rangers past the Minnesota Twins 9-6. Richard Hidalgo homered and had three hits and Michael Young homered and had two hits for Texas.

Doug Brocail (3-0) got one out in relief for the win and Francisco Cordero got three outs for his 12th save.

Glavine Steers Mets

to Victory

In New York, Tom Glavine pitched seven shutout innings and Cliff Floyd hit a pair of home runs as the New York Mets blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 in National League play at Shea Stadium on Friday night.

The 39-year-old Glavine allowed just four hits after being hit hard in his previous three starts. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.

In other NL games played, Todd Pratt had four hits and drove in five runs as the Phillies mauled the Cincinnati Reds 12-2 in Philadelphia. Pratt’s hits included a three-run homer.

In Washington, Aramis Ramirez homered and the Chicago Cubs scored three unearned runs to beat the Nationals 6-3. Jeromy Burnitz had two hits and scored twice for Chicago.

In Pittsburgh, Geoff Jenkins run-scoring double in the ninth inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 4-3 win over the Pirates. Lyle Overbay had two hits and drove in a run for the Brewers.

In Houston, Kirk Reuter pitched seven strong innings as the San Francisco Giants edged the Astros 4-2. Reuter (2-2) gave up one run on six hits with two walks as manager Felipe Alou won his 900th career game.

In Denver, Clint Barmes homered twice and drove in five runs as the Colorado Rockies pounded the Arizona Diamondbacks 18-3. Garrett Atkins homered and drove in three runs and Matt Holliday had four hits, scored three runs and drove in two more for Colorado.

In San Diego, Roberto Hernandez’s RBI double in the seventh inning drove in the winning run as the Padres edged the Florida Marlins 3-2. Ryan Klesko had three hits and drove in a run for San Diego.

In Los Angeles, Milton Bradley hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting the Dodgers to a 7-4 win over the Atlanta Braves. Bradley had five RBI in the game for the Dodgers.
