JEDDAH, 16 May 2005 — The Umm Al-Qura University medical college in Makkah is all set to launch its student magazine. “Eda’a” or “Lighting” is the creation of the recently established culture committee of the medical college.

“The magazine’s aim is to facilitate communication between the students and the administration as well as the community,” said Lamia Attas, its editor in chief.

The magazine is under the supervision of the university’s president, Dr. Nasser Al-Saleh, and the management of Dr. Abdul Razik Sultan, the medical college dean. To be published quarterly, it will be written and edited by a group of students, both male and female, with the help of faculty members.

“The magazine will have a balanced input of articles on science and culture,” Attas told Arab News. The cover story in the first issue is on blood bank. It also includes a report on dengue fever, causes and ways of prevention.

The medical college culture committee was established after the naming of Makkah as the Islamic cultural capital of the year.

As its first activity the committee hosted a lecture by Farida Farsi, owner of Al-Hamra School, last week. The topic of the lecture was “The dialogue culture and its role in spreading the spirit of tolerance”.

The committee plans to organize two book exhibitions every year.
