PHILADELPHIA, 17 May 2005 — Vicente Padilla pitched six shutout innings for his first win of the season and Bobby Abreu homered and drove in two runs as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Padilla (1-4) won for the first time since September 29 as the struggling Phillies, mired in last place in the National League East despite their high payroll, managed a split of the four-game series. It was Padilla’s longest outing of the season as he threw 96 pitches and walked six batters. But he allowed just four hits and had three strikeouts in his best game since coming off the disabled list in mid-April.

Four relievers finished up for the Phillies, including Billy Wagner, who allowed a pair of ninth inning runs but got four outs to earn his ninth save of the season. Sean Casey, Austin Kearns and Ken Griffey Jr drove in the Cincinnati runs.

In other NL games, Nick Johnson homered as the Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-4 in Washington. Hector Carrasco (1-0) got one out for the win. Chad Cordero pitched one inning for his ninth save.

In New York, Matt Morris pitched 7-2/3 strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Mets 4-2. Morris (3-0) allowed two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out six. In Los Angeles, Tim Hudson pitched six strong innings as the Atlanta Braves beat the Dodgers 5-2. Hudson (4-2) allowed two runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out five. Dan Kolb pitched one inning for his 10th save.

In San Diego, Dave Roberts homered and drove in three runs as the Padres beat the Florida Marlins 12 -4. Rudy Seanez (2-0) pitched 1-1/3 innings, allowing one hit for the win. San Diego scored 10 runs in the seventh inning.

Halladay Picks Up 6th Win as Jays Stop Tribe

In Cleveland, Roy Halladay pitched 7 2/3 innings and Vernon Wells hit a three-run homer as the Toronto Blue Jays avoided a series sweep with a 5-2 win over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Halladay (6-2) allowed five singles and got 14 outs on grounders. He walked three and struck out six in improving to 4-0 in eight career starts against Cleveland.

Wells’ shot in the eighth inning was off C.C. Sabathia (2-3). Alex Rios hit a solo homer in the third as the Blue Jays snapped a seven-game losing streak against Cleveland.

Angels 9 Tigers 3: In Detroit, Bengie Molina’s three-run double capped a six-run third inning and John Lackey won for the third time in four starts for Los Angeles. The Angels hadn’t scored more than five runs since beating Oakland 9-5 on April 23, a span of 18 games.

Twins 5 Rangers 2: In Minneapolis, Shannon Stewart snapped a tie game with a three-run homer in the sixth inning, lifting Brad Radke and Minnesota. Stewart drove in four runs for the Twins, who avoided their first three-game sweep of the season. Royals 4 Devil Rays 3: In Kansas City, Missouri, Alberto Castillo hit a tiebreaking, two-run triple and scored on Mark Hendrickson’s balk, lifting Kansas City to its first home series win of the season. Angel Berroa had an inside-the-park home run in the third inning for the Royals, who won three of four from a Tampa Bay team which dropped to 2-13 on the road.

Orioles 6 White Sox 2: In Chicago, the White Sox didn’t lead for the first time this season, as Sal Fasano and David Newhan hit their first home runs in Baltimore’s victory.

Mariners 5 Red Sox 4: In Seattle, Miguel Olivo had three hits, including his first homer of the season, and Seattle overcame Manny Ramirez’s 400th home run. Ramirez became the 39th player in MLB history to reach 400 when his three-run shot with two outs in the fifth brought Boston within a run.

Yankees 6 Athletics 4: In Oakland, California, Tino Martinez hit two more homers to give him eight in eight games, and slumping Jason Giambi doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of New York’s eighth straight victory.
