CARDIFF, 18 May 2005 — Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium will host the 2006 European Cup final, it was announced here yesterday.
It will be the second time the ground has hosted European club rugby’s biggest match and the fourth time in 11 years the final has been played in the Welsh capital.
The Millennium Stadium last played host to the final in 2002 when English giants Leicester beat Irish province Munster 15-9.
This match means the ground will stage eight major matches during the 2005-06 season, starting with the Welsh Rugby Union’s 125th anniversary season match between Wales and New Zealand in November and culminating in the return of the European Cup final 10 years on from the inaugural final at the old National Stadium in 1996. “It will be great to have the Heineken Cup final back in Cardiff and it will round off a fantastic season of international rugby at the Millennium Stadium,” said WRU chief executive David Moffett.
