TORONTO, 26 May 2005 — Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada each belted a pair of home runs and Robinson Cano and Gary Sheffield added solo shots as the New York Yankees pounded the Detroit Tigers 12-3 at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. The six round-trippers were a season high for the surging Yankees, who moved three games above .500 for the first time this campaign. Mike Mussina (5-2) was impressive on the mound for the hosts, scattering six hits over seven shutout innings as New York won for the 13th time in 15 games.
In Toronto, Reed Johnson clubbed a pair of home runs, including a game winning three-run blast in the ninth inning, as the Blue Jays picked up a 9-6 win over the Boston Red Sox. With the game tied 6-6, Johnson smacked a walk off homer to deep center, bringing across Orlando Hudson and John McDonald.
In Baltimore, Jay Gibbons’s eighth inning solo home run earned the Orioles a 3-2 decision over the Seattle Mariners. Todd Williams (4-3) tossed a perfect eighth inning of relief to earn the win while B.J. Ryan worked a scoreless ninth to register his 13th save.
In St. Petersburg, Josh Phelps homered and had three RBIs to lead the Tampa Bay Devils to a 5-4 win over the slumping Oakland Athletics to snap a three game losing skid. With the game tied 4-4 in the seventh, Julio Lugo singled to left bringing in Alex Gonzalez with the winning run.
In Cleveland, Justin Morneau looped a game winning three-run double with two out in the 11th inning to lift the Minnesota Twins to a 6-3 victory over the Indians, their fifth win in seven games. Tied 3-3, Morneau doubled to left center with the bases loaded, scoring Nick Punto, Shannon Stewart and Lew Ford.
In Arlington, Richard Hidalgo homered twice and Ryan Drese tossed seven solid innings as the Texas Rangers slipped past the Kansas City Royals 4-3 for their fourth straight win. Drese (4-4) surrendered two runs on eight hits, stuck out two and walked three to earn the win.
In Anaheim, Carl Everett homered in the first inning and Tadahito Iguchi had a game-winning RBI double in the 11th, to earn the Chicago White Sox a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
Hudson Makes Quick Return to Help Braves Blank Mets
In Toronto, Pitching on three days rest in the regular season for the first time, Tim Hudson tossed eight shutout innings to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 4-0 victory over the New York Mets at Turner Field on Tuesday.
Hudson (5-3), who has pitched on three days rest twice befpre in the postseason, scattered six hits, struck out three, walked two and helped his own cause by driving in a run as the Braves won for the third time in four games.
In Miami, Carlos Delgado smacked a game-winning 10th inning RBI double to lift the Florida Marlins to a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, their sixth straight win.
After Damion Easley hit a game-tying homer off Phillies closer Billy Wagner with two out in the ninth, Delgado lined a drive to right center with two out in the 10th to score Joe Dillon with the winning run.
In Chicago, Jeromy Burnitz’s bases loaded single in the eighth inning drove in the go ahead run as the Cubs rallied to claim a 4-2 win over the Houston Astros, who slumped to their seventh straight defeat.
Of more concern to the Astros, ace Roger Clemens was forced to leave the game with a sore groin in the fifth inning after holding the Cubs scoreless on two hits.
In Milwaukee, Carlos Lee smacked a three-run homer and drove in four runs, powering the Brewers to a 6-1 win over the Colorado Rockies. Victor Santos (2-4) provided six solid innings to get the win, surrendering one run on six hits, striking out six and walking one.
In St Louis, Yadier Molina slapped a game winning RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Cardinals edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1. Molina’s only hit of the game, a chopper to left, scored Reggie Sanders, who opened the 12th with a base hit to right.
In Cincinnati, Randy Keisler ended a 14-inning marathon with an RBI single and picked up the win in relief as the Reds trimmed the Washington Nationals 4-3.
Recalled from the minors on Monday, Keisler’s hit and RBI were the first of his major league career.
In San Francisco, Mike Matheny had three-run homer and Jason Schmidt returned from the disabled list to toss five solid innings and had a solo blast as the Giants downed the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3.
Schmidt (3-1), sidelined since May 10 with a shoulder injury, allowed three runs on five hits, striking out seven and walking three in five innings of work to claim the win.
In Phoenix, Phil Nevin and Robert Fick both homered and Adam Eaton provided 5 2/3 solid innings as the Padres overwhelmed the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-5. Eaton (7-1) allowed three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts helping the Padres to their ninth win in 11 games.
