JEDDAH, 7 June 2005 — Effat College in Jeddah will establish an academy of fashion design in partnership with Canada.

This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Canadian Education Network, LaSalle College of Canada, and Effat College, the Canadian Embassy said yesterday.

“The partnership will create an academy of design at Effat College,” the spokesman for the embassy said, adding that the first phase will begin with a fashion design program developed by LaSalle College, which will cater to the needs of the Gulf region.

“Students will be able to register and receive training at the college and may also have the option to complete part of the program in Canada,” he said.

On completion of the program, students will be granted a diploma issued jointly by Effat College and LaSalle College. Additional programs may be offered at a later date including architectural design, digital media, aesthetics and visual design.

LaSalle College, recognized in the industry as offering the highest caliber of training, has become the largest private collegial-level career-training institute in Canada. The group operates schools with over 2,000 students enrolled in fashion studies alone. The college has signed several articulation agreements with renowned universities, allowing graduating students the possibility of pursuing their studies at an advanced level.

The mandate of the CEN, founded in 1994 with financial assistance from the Canadian government, is to assist international students in their pursuit of higher education in Canada. It also endeavors to assist colleges and universities in creating customized programs and training in cooperation with Canadian institutes and businesses.

Effat College is involved in the development, budgeting and management of various programs which are designed to meet the educational needs of women in the Kingdom.
