NEW DELHI, 30 June 2005 — Bihar Assembly Speaker Sadanand Singh yesterday resigned from his post amidst speculation of he being made state Congress party president.
Sadanand said that in accordance with the rules he addressed his resignation to deputy speaker of the last assembly Bhola Singh and also informed Gov. Buta Singh about it.
Sadanand was speaker of the 11th state assembly and since the house was not constituted after elections for the 12th assembly and the house was dissolved after being in suspended animation during president’s rule for nearly three months. So, new speaker was elected and Sadanand continued as the speaker.
He is all set to replace Ram Jatan Sinha as Bihar Congress chief, sources said. Ram Jatan had resigned as Congress president early last month following dismal performance of the party in the last elections. Congress had won only 10 seats in the 243-member assembly.
Congress last time contested Assembly polls in alliance with Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) of Ram Vilas Paswan. But this time Congress seems to be in no mood to enter into an alliance with LJP and is likely to fight unitedly with all the united Progressive Alliance (UPA) partners.
