CAIRO, 28 July 2005 — Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is set to end months of speculation by finally announcing today that he will seek a fifth mandate in the first ever multi-candidate election on Sept. 7, officials and media reports said.
“President Mubarak is expected to announce his candidacy tomorrow while visiting the Munufiya governorate,” an official from Mubarak’s ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) told AFP yesterday on condition of anonymity.
“President Hosni Mubarak will announce tomorrow his decision to run for the presidency,” the government-owned Al-Akhbar daily also reported.
“As soon as he announces his candidacy, the National Democratic Party’s policy committee will review the candidacy and take a vote,” the newspaper added.
