JEDDAH, 6 October 2005 — Thousands of prisoners held for petty crimes are released during Ramadan, irrespective of their faith and nationalities, according to Brig. Ahmed Al-Zahrani, director of prisons in the Western Province. “This is one of the hallmarks of the Saudi government,” he said.
Zahrani emphasized the tolerance of Islam and said, “Our religion encourages us to behave considerately to other people,” he said. Expatriate prisoners will remain in the Kingdom after their release unless there is a special order to deport them, he pointed out.
Zahrani urged prisoners who have been given amnesty not to engage in any criminal activity and to play a positive role in society.
