HYDERABAD, 23 October 2005 — Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s two-day “private visit” to study the functioning of self-help groups in Andhra Pradesh has caused a big disappointment to Congress leaders and the cadres alike.
Neither the state government nor the party was officially involved with the trip, much to the consternation of local functionaries. Even the media was not invited by anyone; they merely intruded into the venues to cover the events from a distance.
Congressmen were denied permission to enter the VIP lounge at Hyderabad airport on Friday when Rahul Gandhi arrived. Congress MP Anjan Kumar Yadav and party MLAs from the city were not allowed to go to the tarmac to receive him.
