JEDDAH, 1 March 2006 — The Ministry of Education will begin phasing out evening schools this year, an education official told Arab News yesterday.
The process of shifting these classes to the morning throughout the Kingdom will take place gradually over the next five years as larger buildings replace smaller ones.
“Evening schools are a temporary solution for the shortage of school buildings,” said Abdullah Al-Thakafi, assistant director of education in Jeddah, pointing out that they tend to come and go.
“An evening school typically does not stay around for more than two to three years. Then the school gets transferred to a new building in order for all students to attend their schools in the morning,” Al-Thakafi said.
Jeddah currently has 40 evening schools waiting for newer, larger buildings.
