KARACHI, 10 March 2006 — There are only six Pakistanis left in the US prison at Guantanamo, sources said. The list of 62 names published in Pakistani newspapers a few days ago showed the total number of Pakistanis who were brought to Guantanamo. The list was obtained under a successful freedom of “information” request lodged by Associated Press and the Washington Post. However, sources said that 56 of the Pakistanis who spent varying amounts of detention time at the US Naval facility in Cuba have since been released. Sources said efforts are underway at the Pakistan Embassy in the US to obtain the release of the remaining six. It is not clear what happened to former Guantanamo detainees once they were repatriated to Pakistan.
