The Textile Research Centre, Leiden, and the National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden, The Netherlands, are preparing an exhibition about Saudi Arabian clothing called, “Flowing Robes: Saudi Arabian Dress.” It is based upon the museum’s 19th century collection of men and women’s garments from the Makkah region given in 1884 by the Dutch diplomat J.A. Kruyt, and the TRC’s collection of men and women’s clothing from the late 20th century. The exhibition will open on Oct. 26, 2006, and will last for three to four months.

At present, TRC is looking for stories, photographs, actual garments, etc. that will add an extra dimension to the exhibit. As the TRC is working on a very limited budget, they are requesting items on loan or for donation. To obtain further information about requirements for the exhibition, please e-mail: Dr. Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood, director, TRC, [email protected].

TRC (www.texdress.nl) is an independent research institute for dress and textiles attached to RMV. Currently, online, TRC is hosting a digital exhibition on “ihram” of the pilgrims to Makkah. TRC also organizes “Khila,” an annual academic journal on the theme of dress and textiles in the Islamic world. Any aspect of dress and textiles will be considered for publication purposes, including studies relating to archaeological textiles, anthropological, economic, historical, iconographical, religious studies as well as technical analyses.
