JEDDAH, 28 August 2006 — Saudi Arabia declared their readiness for a key AFC Asian Cup qualifying match against Japan by scoring a 1-0 victory against UAE in a friendly international at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium here last night.
Saleh Basheer struck in the 9th minute for the only goal of the match. Basher latched on a beautiful cross inside the penalty box and slammed home the winner against a side coached by French Bruno Mitsu.
In a spirited display, both teams went on the attack and counterattack.
The friendly was part of the Kingdom’s preparations for a home tie against Japan next Sunday.
Saudi Arabia had earlier won their Group A qualifying matches against Yemen 4-0 and India 3-0.
