PUNE — A Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 747 carrying Haj pilgrims from Dhaka to Jeddah made an emergency landing at the Nagpur Airport on Tuesday evening following an SOS message to the Nagpur control tower from the captain of the aircraft stating medical emergency.

An Airports Authority of India (AAI) official told Arab News on phone from Nagpur that the Saudi Arabian Airlines flight SV 5959 was overflying Nagpur airspace with more than 300 Haj passengers when the captain asked the control tower for permission to land. The captain made the request as a Bangladeshi woman Haj pilgrim Noorunissa Chaudhary, 58, had fainted after chest pain.

On the request of the captain, a team of doctors from a local hospital attended to the patient at the airport. The doctors who examined Noorunissa were of the opinion that she might have been a cardiac patient, and that the flight delay at Dhaka may have led to her condition. The passenger was given the required treatment and allowed to continue her journey.
