AURANGABAD/BOMBAY, 11 May 2006 — Indian police have arrested three men and seized a cache of weapons and explosives, Bombay police chief said yesterday.
The men were arrested and 10 assault rifles, 30 kilograms of explosives and ammunition were seized at Aurangabad in the western state of Maharashtra, said police commissioner A.N. Roy. “At this stage we’re not linking them to a particular (militant) organization,” said Roy.
He said police had received a tip-off and had been working for some time on the operation. “According to the indications we have received from these three arrested people, it (the cache) was supposed to be taken to Kashmir.”
According to another report, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Bombay and Delhi Police arrested one of the suspects said to belong to Lashkar-e-Taiba outfit late Tuesday night. Three of his accomplices had managed to escape. Without naming the arrested militant, ATS officials said they had recovered a huge quantity of arms that included four kilograms of RDX, eight detonators and Indian rupees. Raids were later conducted in various parts of the city to nab the three fugitive militants.
The ATS squad of Bombay had arrested two Lashkar militants Feroze Abdul Latif Ghaswala and Muhammed Ali in Delhi when they got down from the Golden Temple Express. On interrogation they disclosed they had planned to target Bollywood events, Hindi film celebrities as well as crowded shopping complexes in Bombay.
