Pakistan to Induct Harpoon Missile

ISLAMABAD, 2 June 2006 — After a series of talks at various levels the United States has agreed to sell 80 Harpoon missiles to Pakistan for their onward induction into the Pakistan’s Armed Forces, Defense Ministry officials confirmed here yesterday. “The deal was finalized during last month’s visit to Washington by Defense Secretary Lt. Gen. Tariq Wasim Ghazi who attended the US-Pak Defense Consultative Group’s meeting and held meetings with officials concerned at the Pentagon.The acquisition of Harpoon Missiles’ latest version remained part of Pakistan’s policy to modernize its armed forces at all levels. The Pentagon too gave the go ahead to the over $190 million deal through which Pakistan will be able to acquire 80 Harpoon missiles. Pakistan intends to fit the Harpoon missiles in its submarine, destroyers and launch systems.
