BOMBAY, 26 June 2006 — Alarmed by widespread corruption in the country, bureaucrats — both retired and serving — have joined hands to combat it.

Former director general of police, Punjab, Julio Riberio, a member of the team, admitted the difficult nature of the group’s mission, but said a beginning has to be made.

According to Riberio, who is based in Bombay, the newly formed India Rejuvenation Initiative (IRI) group includes former Chief Justice of India R.C. Lahoti, former Chief Election Commissioner J.M. Lygndoh, former Comptroller and Auditor-General V.K. Shunglu, former Chairman of University Grants Commission Hari Gautam and former Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal S. Krishnaswamy.

Several educationists, senior Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service officers will also lend their services when required. Vijay Shankar Pandey, a senior IAS officer who is also a member of the IRI, said the group will expose corruption, gross inaction and inefficiency in high places.

“Wrongdoers can be identified very easily,” Pandey said.
