RIYADH, 3 October 2006 —As a major player in the high-tech engineering market, Samsung Saudi Arabia Ltd. is committed to becoming a regional engineering value shaper that creates high future value for customers. In the years ahead, Samsung has also resolved to lay added emphasis on strengthening customer-oriented business, upgrading business portfolio and enhancing project execution capabilities, while it is emerging as a true No.1 company not only in Saudi Arabia but all over the world.

Speaking on the occasion of the Korea’s national foundation day, Shin-Youl Kang, Samsung’s vice president and resident director, gave an overview of Samsung’s presence in Saudi Arabia with special reference to a few prestigious projects. Kang said that Samsung is working on four major projects in the Kingdom, which included Tasnee Ethylene Project worth $860 million, APPC PDH/PP Project worth $510 million, Sharq EG project worth $350 million and Ibn Zahr PP-3 project worth $302 million.

“We are also currently participating in the several tenders including tenders for Kayan EG, PP, Ibn Zhar OCT proejcts and so on,” said Kang, adding that Samsung believes in the successful completion of on-going projects, which can give full satisfaction to the clients in terms of quality, schedule, standards and safety. “These features serve as key factors for business development and help to boost growth of the company together with the clients,” he said.

Asked about the expertise in handling energy and environmental projects, he said that Samsung had specialized itself in energy and environmental projects overseas as well as in domestic markets. “In fact, we have executed 24 refinery projects and 133 environmental projects with 155 intellectual property rights,” said Samsung official. “At the moment, one energy project is under construction stage in Mexico and another one energy project is under bidding stage in Kuwait,” he said.

In fact, Samsung has vigorously tackled environmental and energy-related research projects. This has brought about several successes including the original invention of hydrogen storage and high-class system related technology, both core technologies in the field of fuel-cells, an area that is coming into spotlight as the next-general energy resource. Also, several environmental projects are in the preparation stage to be announced by Saudi Arabia as well as other Gulf countries, he noted. Samsung, he said, had successfully executed a $350 million-SPC PDH/PP Project and a $50 million Petrokemya butane-1 project. “We are eyeing for major projects in the Kingdom,” said Kang, while referring to the recent projects’ announcements made by Saudi government. He said that a large number of projects were in the pipeline in the Kingdom especially in sectors like social infrastructure, industry, oil & gas, and petrochemicals.

Some of them, which are led by governmental organizations, include Jubail No. 2 and Yanbu Industial Complex, Petro-Rabigh Complex, King Abdullah Economic City Project, Prince Abdulaziz bin Mousaed City Project and Hail Yanbu/Jubail Refinery, Ras Tanura Refining/Petrochemical Complex etc. Referring to the high-technological capability of Samsung, Kang said that Samsung had experience in operating and handling petrochemical, oil and gas, refinery, industrial, and environmental projects and plants.

“All lessons learned from these experiences have been shared by Samsung’s intranet system such as “Single” and “Enwiz(Engineering Wisdom)”, he said, while referring to the Samsung’s commitment to support the Kingdom’s policy of the nationalization of workforce. He said that Samsung had successfully built its own good reputation among clients mainly for its efforts in successfully completing valuable projects with marked different in terms of quality, schedule and safety.

“For instance, Samsung received the contracts for the Tasnee Ethylene Project and APPC PDH/PP Project mainly because of the good results shown by this company on SPC PDH/PP Project,” he said. He said that Samsung had organized its technical and manpower infrastructure in the Kingdom in such a way that it can handle any kind and any size of projects. The company has laid particular emphasis on IT, accommodation, integrated administration, public relations, human resources and construction equipment operation under the supervision of Jubail integrated office.

This helps to maximize the synergy effect considering the limited resources and market situation. Asked about the total value of the projects currently being implemented by Samsung Saudi Arabia, Kang said that the contract value of the four ongoing projects in the Kingdom is $600 million. But, the global cumulative figure for our contracts is staggering. In fact, Samsung Engineering, the parent company of Samsung Saudi Arabia Ltd., is maximizing its competency in tandem by establishing global network with an aim to sharpen worldwide competitive edge.

“We are also beefing up our management in the areas of technology, project control, construction and procurement while building much closer strategic ties with leading competitors,” said S. H. Jwa, Samsung’s planning engineer. He said that Samsung Engineering’s business encompasses petrochemical, oil, gas, industrial facilities, and environmental plants that enrich our lives and a full range of engineering services including feasibility study, design, procurement, construction, facility operation and management.

He said that Samsung Engineering’s first and foremost mission was to generate values for its customers and shape businesses for continuous fulfillment of client’s needs. By working on hydrocarbon-based business and high-tech facility projects besides environment and biotechnology contracts that deliver high values and constant large volumes of return, Samsung is aligning its business structure with global standards, realizing the goal of becoming a global comprehensive engineering company to lead the world.
