NEW DELHI, 17 October 2006 — The Bihar unit of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) yesterday demanded that the death sentence to Mohammed Afzal Guru, convicted in the Parliament attack case, be executed soon and the center make clear its stand on the issue.
A 13-member delegation, headed by the party’s newly elected state president Radha Mohan Singh, submitted a memorandum to Gov. R.S. Gavai for President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and said there was no ground for clemency for Afzal.
The BJP said “no grounds of clemency exist as the convict has no remorse for attacking the Parliament and has not submitted the clemency petition himself to the president.”
The state BJP president said it seemed Afzal facing death penalty “has no faith in the constitution of India.”
He said the party felt that the United Progressive Alliance government headed by Congress was avoiding taking a position on Afzal because of the upcoming elections in several states.
