MUMBAI, 28 November 2006 — A special court yesterday convicted three more persons of involvement in the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai. A fourth person was given the benefit of the doubt and acquitted.
Of the three convicted, two were customs officials — collector R.K. Singh and senior superintendent S.M. Sayed. Mansoor Ahmed was the third man convicted. The court acquitted Ajay Marwah, a close friend of movie star Sanjay Dutt. The court is expected to give its verdict on Dutt, also an accused in the case, today.
The actor allegedly stashed an assault rifle on behalf of the bomb plotter. But Dutt says he bought the weapon to protect his family and denied any role in the blasts.
Dutt spent 18 months in jail after his initial arrest on the charges and faces a sentence of as much as five years if convicted.
“I wish and pray everything goes well and I just get my freedom. I am nervous and apprehensive as every human being would be,” the Bollywood action hero told CNN-IBN television in an interview recently.
